R & D
We have an ongoing R&D programme which has recently stepped up a gear following our successful win of a TTOM Award (Technology Transfer in Optoelectronics and Microelectronics). This is a Scottish Enterprise sponsored programme administered by Scottish Optoelectronics to encourage collaboration between universities and commercial companies. In our case we are working with iSLI, System Level Integration Ltd. who are owned by 5 Scottish Universities.

The objective of the programme is to develop a method of sensing the presence of birds at a range of up to 300 metres. Such a range is a requirement for customers with large roofs such as can be found in retail warehouses and modern high tech industrial units. Very little research appears to have been done on the subject of bird sensing and detection. There are of course many systems designed for intruder detection but these have a maximum range of 12 metres and have been designed to filter out birds and animals so as not to give a false alarm. The team have come up with a novel method which we are working to develop at this time (December 2006).

Assuming the current programme is successful, the plan is to link the sensing system to Robop so that if a gull, for example, lands on the roof Robop will turn to face the intruder and respond aggressively. We see this as the next stage in the evolution of Robop.
